Painting Cabinet Doors

Step-by-Step Guide to a Professional Finish

Cabinet doors are the most visible part of your cabinets. Learning to paint them correctly is the key to a professional-looking kitchen transformation. This guide covers everything from removal to flawless finishing.

🤔 Your Options

Replace Doors Only

$100-300/door

Keep boxes, buy new doors. Good if doors are damaged or you want a style change (shaker to flat, etc.).

Refinish (Stain)

$50-100/door

Strip and restain. Only for real wood. Preserves natural grain appearance.

🎯 Paint Just Doors?

You can paint only cabinet doors and leave the frames. This is faster and cheaper, but frames may look dated next to fresh doors. Most pros recommend painting both.

🔧 How to Remove Cabinet Doors

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Number each door and drawer

Use painter's tape and marker. Write numbers on hinge side AND on frame. Photo the layout for reference.

  2. Remove hinges

Unscrew hinges from door (not from frame). Keeps frame holes available for reinstall. Bag hinges with matching number.

  3. Remove drawer fronts

Most detach from inside with screws. Some are attached to drawer box—remove whole drawer.

  4. Remove hardware

Take off knobs and pulls. Upgrade or reuse—your choice.

💡 Don't Skip Numbering

Hinges aren't identical—holes align slightly differently. Not numbering doors is the #1 DIY mistake. You'll spend hours troubleshooting alignment.

🧹 Prepping Doors for Paint

Essential Prep Steps

1

Clean Thoroughly

Degrease with TSP or Krud Kutter. Kitchen cabinets accumulate invisible grease that prevents adhesion.

2

Sand Surfaces

Scuff with 150-180 grit. Creates "tooth" for primer. Don't sand through finish—just dull the sheen.

3

Fill Holes & Damage

Use wood filler for dents and scratches. Fill old hardware holes if changing knob locations.

4

Prime

Shellac-based primer (BIN) for stained wood. Bonding primer for laminate. Let dry 24 hours.

5

Sand Again

Light sand with 220 grit after priming. Creates smooth base for paint. Tack cloth to remove dust.

🖌️ Painting Techniques

Method Comparison

🎨 Spray (Best Results)

  • Factory-smooth finish
  • No brush marks possible
  • Faster once set up
  • Requires spray area, masking

🖌️ Brush + Foam Roller

  • Less setup required
  • Good results with practice
  • Some texture visible
  • Easy touch-ups later

Painting Order

  1. Back first: Start with back of doors, let dry, flip
  2. Edges: Paint edges after back dries
  3. Front: Paint fronts last for best visibility
  4. Raised panels: Paint inside panel first, then rails/stiles

Tips for Smooth Finish

  • Apply 2-3 thin coats, not 1 thick coat
  • Use self-leveling cabinet paint (BM Advance, SW Emerald Urethane)
  • Maintain wet edge—work quickly
  • Light sand (320 grit) between coats
  • Keep consistent temperature and humidity

⏰ Drying & Curing

Drying Setup

Drying Rack

Build a rack from 2x4s with screws pointing up. Doors rest on points—minimal contact marks.

Painter's Pyramids

Small plastic pyramids let you flip doors sooner. Essential for efficiency.

Drying Time

Follow label—usually 24 hours between coats for cabinet paint. Don't rush!

⚠️ Cure Time vs Dry Time

Dry: Can recoat (24 hours)
Cure: Full hardness (30 days)

Doors are delicate until fully cured. Handle gently, use felt bumpers to prevent sticking.

🔩 Reinstalling Doors

  1. Wait minimum 5-7 days after final coat (longer is better)
  2. Attach hinges to doors first (matching numbered bags)
  3. Hang doors back on frame
  4. Adjust hinges for alignment
  5. Install hardware (or upgrade to new)
  6. Apply felt bumpers to prevent door slapping

💡 Upgrade Hardware

New knobs and pulls are cheap and make a huge impact. If changing hole locations, fill old holes before painting.
