Five rules that decide it
- Laminate, thermofoil, and MDF cannot be stained. True stain-refinishing only works on real wood, plywood, and wood veneer. Laminate, thermofoil (RTF), melamine, and MDF surfaces take paint or gel stain only (HomeGuide).
- Refinishing requires sound doors and boxes. Refinishing only works if cabinet boxes and doors are in good shape. Heavily damaged doors need replacing, and boxes with structural issues call for full replacement (HomeGuide).
- Rule out water damage first. Confirm there is no water damage before refinishing — swollen panels and delamination will telegraph through any new finish (HomeGuide).
- Refacing cannot change your layout. Refacing requires boxes in good condition and cannot move cabinets, change the footprint, or add storage. If the layout is the problem, refacing is beside the point (HomeGuide; Bob Vila).
- Finish direction is one-way. You can go from stain to a darker stain or from stain to paint, but you typically can't go from a solid painted color back to a stain (Angi, May 2026).
