Step 1: Read Your Brick's Undertone

Before browsing swatches, stand across the street at midday and squint at your brick. Ignore the mortar and ask one question: does the overall field lean orange, brown, or pink? Most "red brick" is actually orange-red; a lot of 1960s–80s brick reads brown or tan; and some older blends have a distinct salmon-pink cast that only shows up next to the wrong paint color.

• Orange-red brick: the classic tone — warm, saturated, high-energy. Needs a door that contrasts in depth, not in temperature.
• Brown/tan brick: quieter and earthier. Handles muted, dusty door colors that would vanish against brighter brick.
• Pink-leaning brick: the trickiest. Warm reds and oranges on the door amplify the pink; deep greens and soft blacks calm it down.
• Painted or limewashed brick: the field is now a neutral, so the door can carry almost any color — this is where bolder choices are easiest to pull off.

Mortar matters too. Bright white mortar joints make brick look busier, which argues for a calmer, darker door. Gray or buff mortar blends the wall into one field and gives you more room to play.

Step 2: Use LRV to Judge Depth Before You Sample

LRV — Light Reflectance Value — is the number paint manufacturers publish for every color, on a 0–100 scale: 0 is absolute black, 100 is pure reflective white. For front doors against brick it's the single most useful spec, because most brick sits mid-range in depth. A door that also sits mid-range tends to melt into the wall; a door well below or well above the brick's value pops.

Best Door Colors for Orange-Red Brick

This is most Charlotte brick — the warm, saturated red-orange field on ranches and two-story traditionals alike. The goal is contrast in depth while staying friendly to the brick's warmth.

Skip: terracotta, rust, and tomato reds. They share the brick's own hue at a similar depth, and the door disappears.

Best Door Colors for Brown & Tan Brick

Brown and buff brick is quieter, so the door can be more interesting. Muted, dusty colors that would sink into orange brick hold their own here.

Pink-Leaning and Painted Brick

If your brick reads pink

Salmon and pink-cast brick punishes warm door colors — orange, coral, and bright red all magnify the pink. The fix is to go cool and deep: SW Iron Ore, BM Essex Green, or a muted navy like BM Hale Navy visually neutralize the cast. A soft white door with the same white on trim also works by giving the eye a clean anchor.

If your brick is painted or limewashed

Once brick is painted white, greige, or limewashed, the door becomes the one place for real color. Deep greens, slate blues, and even olive — a color buyers paid an estimated $969 more for in Zillow's study — all land easily against a light field. Door color is one of the few paint decisions with actual buyer-behavior research behind it. In 2022, Zillow showed recent and prospective buyers images of the same home with front doors in 11 different colors and measured perception, purchase likelihood, and willingness to pay (premiums calculated against a typical U.S. home value of $334,141):

The takeaway for brick homes is convenient: the two colors buyers rewarded most — black and slate blue — are also two of the most flattering colors against nearly every brick tone.

What a door repaint costs

A front door is the highest-leverage exterior paint project per dollar. According to HomeGuide, painting a front door runs $125 to $225 on average; Angi puts a typical single front door at $100 to $220, with the broader range for doors at $80 to $500 depending on size, glass panels, and condition (Angi, 2026). Sheen and prep

• Satin or semi-gloss is the standard for doors — enough sheen to wipe clean and shed rain, without broadcasting every dent the way high gloss does. (True high-gloss "lacquered" doors look stunning but demand near-perfect prep.)
• Dark colors and sun: a black or navy door on a west- or south-facing entry gets hot in Carolina summers. Use an exterior paint line rated for dark colors, and be cautious pairing very dark doors with glass storm doors, which can trap heat against the slab.
• Steel and fiberglass doors need a scuff-sand and the right primer; a smooth factory finish is the main reason DIY door paint peels early.

Charlotte housing stock and HOAs

Charlotte's older neighborhoods — the mid-century ranches of Madison Park, the brick traditionals of Myers Park and Cotswold — are overwhelmingly orange-red brick, which is why black, ivy green, and navy doors are the recurring local answer.
