Does OSHA require yellow paint for warehouse aisle markings?

No. 29 CFR 1910.176(a) says only that 'Permanent aisles and passageways shall be appropriately marked,' and OSHA's own standard interpretation on aisle marking states that 'The lines used to delineate the aisles may be any color so long as they clearly define the area considered as aisle space.' Yellow is the sensible default because 29 CFR 1910.144(a)(3) makes yellow 'the basic color for designating caution and for marking physical hazards' — but that is a convention, not an aisle-color mandate. The duty attaches to the employer wherever forklifts and other mechanical handling equipment are used, and it stays with the employer, not the painter.

Four substrates pretending to be one job

Price a warehouse as "square footage of walls" and the scope falls apart in week one. The envelope is CMU block or tilt-up panel — porous, and thirsty enough that the block filler decision moves material quantity more than color does. Overhead is metal deck, bar joists, conduit and sprinkler pipe: a masking problem, not a coverage problem. The steel — columns, guard rail, mezzanine framing, dock frames — is a separate coating class with its own prep standard. The floor is not painting at all; it is a flooring system with cure schedules and moisture tests attached.

Four surfaces, four failure modes: efflorescence on walls, overspray on sprinkler heads and sensors overhead (a life safety problem, not a cosmetic one), thin film build on steel, moisture through the slab on floors. Steel and floors: the numbers come from the data sheet, not from code

There is no universal "code DFT" for structural steel. Sherwin-Williams' Macropoxy 646 Fast Cure Epoxy specifies 5.0–10.0 mils dry per coat from 7.0–13.5 wet mils at 72% ± 2% volume solids, two coats for steel in atmospheric service, 4-hour pot life at 77°F and a one-year maximum recoat window — after which "If maximum recoat time is exceeded, abrade surface before recoating." Prep is where the honest line falls: that sheet's minimum for atmospheric service is SSPC-SP2/SP3 hand and power tool cleaning, while immersion service demands SSPC-SP10 / NACE 2 near-white blast at a 2–3 mil profile. We coat interior structure and equipment to SP2/SP3. We do not blast, and we say so before quoting.

On floors, cure windows are the schedule. ArmorSeal 8100 water-based epoxy runs 2.0–5.0 mils dry per coat at 41% ± 2% solids and under 50 g/L VOC, applied between 50°F and 100°F at 85% RH maximum, with recoat at 6–72 hours, foot traffic at 18 hours, heavy traffic at 48 hours and full cure at 7 days. Accelera 5 polyaspartic inverts that: 45-minute pot life, 1–30 hour recoat, foot traffic in 75 minutes at 77°F, application down to 35°F, listed as resistant to ultraviolet light. The real trade is speed, cold weather and UV stability against working time — not service life, which neither sheet states. Accelera 5 also requires a 28-day concrete cure plus moisture vapor and water drop tests; we do not run those, so we do not warrant floors against moisture-driven failure. Spraying inside a building that is still running

Spray finishing has its own OSHA standard, and it is not the odor conversation you have in an office. 1910.107(d)(2) requires mechanical ventilation "kept in operation at all times while spraying operations are being conducted and for a sufficient time thereafter to allow vapors from drying coated articles… to be exhausted." 1910.107(c)(2) prohibits open flame or spark-producing equipment "in any spraying area nor within 20 feet thereof, unless separated by a partition" — so battery charging, welding, gas-fired heaters and forklift routes get planned around the spray zone first.

Note what does not apply: the 50–250 fpm air velocities people quote come from the spray booth provisions of 1910.94(c), not from open field application inside a building. What works in a live facility is waterborne coatings with the bay isolated, zero-VOC options on request, HEPA-filtered sanding to keep dust off inventory, and full masking of racking, product, heads, sensors and conveyor. What a written itemized scope should specify

We give written itemized estimates, and the itemization is what makes two proposals comparable. Published painting cost guides disagree by as much as 24x, as our cost guides compared study documents, and material pricing moves independently of labor — see the paint price index. Get these in writing from any bidder:

  • Product and film build — named product, coats, DFT range from that sheet, not a generic "two coats."
  • Where the deck stops — pan only, or joists, bracing, conduit, hangers and pipe.
  • Masking — sprinkler heads, sensors, racking, conveyor, product, and who verifies heads were unmasked.
  • Striping scope — linear feet, width, colors, removal versus overcoat, and who supplies the approved layout drawing.
  • Floor prep and testing — prep method, ICRI profile targeted, and whether moisture testing is excluded.
  • Return to service — recoat and traffic hours at the building's actual temperature, plus who moves racking.

What OSHA actually says about warehouse markings

Most warehouse painting pages get this wrong two ways: they claim OSHA mandates yellow lines and 4-inch stripes, and they publish a full rainbow of "OSHA colors." Neither survives the text.

1910.144 — two colors, not a palette

Red is "the basic color for the identification of" fire protection equipment and apparatus, danger and stop — "Danger signs shall be painted red." Yellow, at 1910.144(a)(3), "shall be the basic color for designating caution and for marking physical hazards such as: Striking against, stumbling, falling, tripping, and 'caught in between.'" Paragraphs (a)(2) and (b) are [Reserved]. Orange, blue, green and purple come from ANSI Z535.1 — a separate, non-OSHA standard.

1910.176(a) — where the striping duty comes from

"Aisles and passageways shall be kept clear and in good repair, with no obstruction across or in aisles that could create a hazard. Permanent aisles and passageways shall be appropriately marked." That is the whole requirement, and it attaches where mechanical handling equipment is in use. No color, no line width, no aisle width — and the duty sits with the employer, not the painter.

The interpretation — recommendations, not rules

OSHA's aisle-marking interpretation says lines "may be any color so long as they clearly define the area considered as aisle space," that "any width 2 inches or more is considered acceptable," and that aisles be "at least 3 feet wider than the largest equipment to be utilized, or a minimum of 4 feet." A separate directive adds that "The intent of 'appropriately marked' is not to restrict the markings to one method only." Both are archived — read as guidance.

1910.134 — the respirator gate

Where workers wear respirators the employer must "establish and implement a written respiratory protection program with worksite-specific procedures," provide a "medical evaluation to determine the employee's ability to use a respirator" before any fit testing, and fit test facepieces before initial use "and at least annually thereafter." That is a real gate on solvent-based industrial coating. We do not operate such a program, so we do not take that work.

  • Bonded, prevailing-wage and public-bid work. We hold no bond, so we do not bid contracts that require one.

Coatings are Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG, specified to the data sheet for the substrate. Coverage is a 6-month workmanship warranty on standard painting, 3-year warranty on UV-cured cabinet finishes — and no multi-year floor guarantee, because without moisture testing nobody can honestly write one.

We execute your plan using OSHA's color conventions and document what was marked where. Anyone selling "OSHA compliance" as a paint package is selling liability they cannot carry.

How long before forklifts can drive on a newly coated floor?

The product data sheet is the answer. Sherwin-Williams' ArmorSeal 8100 water-based epoxy lists, at 77°F, foot traffic at 18 hours, heavy traffic at 48 hours and full cure at 7 days. Accelera 5 polyaspartic reaches foot traffic in 75 minutes at 77°F but has a 45-minute pot life. Those windows stretch as temperature drops, so return-to-service dates belong in the written scope before a shutdown is scheduled.

Epoxy or polyaspartic for a warehouse floor?

The defensible differences are speed, cold-weather window and UV stability — not lifespan, which no manufacturer data sheet states. Accelera 5 polyaspartic applies down to 35°F and returns to foot traffic in 75 minutes at 77°F; ArmorSeal 8100 epoxy needs 50°F minimum and 18 hours to foot traffic, but gives a far longer working window. Ignore any bid quoting "polyaspartic lasts twice as long" — that number is not in any published product data.

Are your painters OSHA certified?

OSHA does not certify or license painting contractors, so there is no such credential to hold. We follow OSHA 1910.144 color conventions when we stripe and work to the manufacturer's published data sheet on coatings. We do not operate a written respiratory protection program under 1910.134, so we do not take respirator-required solvent-based industrial coating, tank interiors or confined-space work.
