We Compared 6 Published Painting Cost Guides

On the same job, the published low and the published high are up to 24 times apart.

96 guide-and-job combinations across HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Fixr, Bob Vila and This Old House. 89 publish a figure, 7 publish nothing at all, and 7 publish a number that cannot be compared with the rest without a caveat. Every figure below links to the page it was read on.

16 jobs compared Widest spread: Interior painting, whole home (24.4x) Tightest: Cabinet refinishing, one kitchen (3.3x)
Study Summary (published industry data) Direct AI & Expert Overview

Why do online painting cost estimates vary so much?

Because the guides are pricing different jobs under the same headline. On a whole-home interior repaint, Angi and HomeAdvisor publish $965 to $3,089 while Fixr publishes $12,648 to $23,540 — a spread of about 24 times — because Fixr prices total home floor area including prep and sealing and Angi prices walls. Across 96 guide-and-job combinations read on August 15, 2026, spreads ran from 3.3x on cabinet refinishing to 24.4x on a whole-home interior repaint.

  • Whole-home interior: $965 to $23,540 published (24x)
  • Cabinet painting: $422 to $6,500 published (15.4x)
  • Angi and HomeAdvisor are one company, not two sources
  • Four of six publish a drywall rate that fails its own math

How this was collected

Data collected August 15, 2026. Every figure links to its public source.

  • Six national cost guides were read directly: HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Fixr, Bob Vila, and This Old House together with its data partner Homewyse.
  • Figures were recorded as published. Nothing was estimated, averaged, rounded or interpolated. Where a guide publishes two conflicting numbers, both are recorded.
  • Spread ratios compare like with like only: project totals against project totals, per-square-foot against per-square-foot, per-linear-foot against per-linear-foot.
  • A figure published on a different basis is shown greyed with the reason stated, and is left out of the spread math. That is 7 of 96 cells.

What this study cannot tell you

  • These are national figures. Not one of them is a Charlotte figure, and none accounts for your surfaces, your prep, your access, or your coating system.
  • Six guides is not the market. Several of them republish each other, so agreement between two guides is weaker evidence than it looks.
  • Pages move. Guides update on their own schedules and several were re-checked mid-study and had already changed. A figure can shift the week after collection.
  • No conclusion is drawn about who is right. The study measures disagreement and internal consistency, not accuracy. Nobody here has seen your house.
  • Ranges are not quotes. Nothing on this page is a price from us or from anyone else.

Eight things the data actually shows

Written after reading every page in the set, not before.

Finding 01

The same kitchen, priced fifteen times apart

Cabinet painting is the widest disagreement on any single, well-defined job in this set. Bob Vila publishes $422 to $1,415 and Angi $425 to $1,466, while HomeGuide publishes $2,000 to $6,500 and Fixr $2,500 to $6,500. That is not regional variation, because all four are national figures. It is scope: the low pair is pricing a light refresh, and the high pair is pricing every door, drawer and box front sprayed and cured. Neither page tells the reader which of the two they are about to buy.

Finding 02

Six guides, but not six datasets

Angi and HomeAdvisor are the same company, and it shows: interior painting is $2,022 on both, exterior is $3,177 on both, cabinet painting is $942 on both. Where they diverge, they diverge by a dollar or two — hardwood refinishing is $1,890 against $1,891, cabinet refinishing $3,114 against $3,116 — which is the signature of one page being refreshed while its twin was not. Bob Vila reproduces HomeAdvisor's cabinet refinishing table figure for figure. This Old House states on its own pages that its cost data comes from Homewyse, Angi, Fixr and The Home Depot. Counting six brands overstates how many independent measurements actually exist.

Finding 03

Four of six publish a drywall rate that cannot be true

Angi, HomeAdvisor, Fixr and This Old House all print a drywall repair rate of roughly $50 to $80 per square foot. Angi's own table on the same page prices 20 square feet at $1,000 to $1,500, which only works if a 20 square foot patch counts as twenty units of work rather than one small repair. Fixr goes further and states, in the same section, that drywall repairs are not usually charged by the square foot but by the hour. HomeGuide's $3 to $8 is the only per-square-foot drywall figure in the whole study that survives being multiplied by a real wall.

Finding 04

The one number everyone agrees on is the one they all copied

Hardwood floor refinishing lands at exactly $3 to $8 per square foot on Angi, HomeAdvisor, Fixr, Bob Vila and This Old House, with HomeGuide close behind at $2 to $7. Five identical ranges is the most reassuring pattern in the study and the most misleading: Angi and HomeAdvisor are one company, Bob Vila attributes its figures to them, and This Old House names Angi and Fixr as its data sources. That is one reading wearing five hats. This Old House's own square-footage table then prices 1,000 square feet at $5,672 to $6,819, a total its own $3 to $8 rate cannot produce.

Finding 05

Guides contradict themselves before they contradict each other

HomeGuide runs two interior pages with different per-room figures, $350 to $850 on one and $300 to $1,000 on the other, and prices cabinet painting at $2,000 to $6,500 on the cabinet page but $900 to $3,800 on the room page. Its exterior page puts limewash at $2.50 to $6.00 per square foot while its brick page says $1.50 to $5.00. This Old House prints its drywall figure three ways on one page: with no unit, per square foot, and as a flat job cost. Angi prints an epoxy range backwards, as $5,800 to $750. Before you compare guides to each other, they have already stopped agreeing with themselves.

Finding 06

Scope, not geography, drives the widest gaps

The whole-home interior repaint runs from $965 at the bottom of the Angi and HomeAdvisor range to $23,540 at the top of Fixr's, a spread of about 24 times. Fixr prices total home floor area for a scope that includes prep, priming, painting and sealing. Angi prices walls. HomeGuide sits between them at $3,500 to $10,000, and This Old House at $1,800 to $10,000. All four headlines read "the cost to paint a house interior." The number changes because the job changes, and the job is described in a sentence most readers never reach.

Finding 07

Coverage is patchier than the category pages suggest

Across 96 guide-and-job combinations, 7 have no published figure at all. Fixr has no cabinet refinishing guide and no brick guide; both URLs return a 404. Bob Vila has no wallpaper installation guide and no whole-home interior guide. HomeAdvisor describes limewash without pricing it, while its Angi twin publishes a $2,000 average. This Old House outsources cabinet refinishing and wallpaper pricing to Homewyse. Only two of the six publish a professional limewash price at all, and a third publishes DIY supply costs of $10 to $80 that are easy to mistake for one.

Finding 08

A 2026 cost guide can be nineteen months old

Freshness varies more inside a single brand than between brands. Angi's epoxy page carries an August 3, 2026 date; its trim page carries January 5, 2024 and is still labelled 2025 data. HomeGuide's popcorn ceiling page dates to October 2023 while its brick page dates to February 2026. Homewyse pages were still stamped May 2026 when this study was collected in mid-August 2026. The year in the headline describes the article title, not necessarily the last time anyone touched the numbers.

What this means when you are actually hiring someone

A national average is a composite of jobs that were never described. That is why two guides can print the same headline and differ by 24 times: one counted walls, the other counted the whole envelope including prep and sealing. Neither is lying. They are answering different questions.

The document that resolves this is not a better average. It is a written, itemized estimate that names the surfaces, the square or linear footage, the prep steps, the coating system and the number of coats. Once those lines exist, the number stops being a mystery, because you can see exactly what is being counted.

That is how we work at Carolina Renew Painting & Finishes: written itemized estimates, so the scope is visible before anyone opens a can. Stan Putilov, the owner, oversees every project. We have been doing this in the Charlotte NC and SC metro since 2023, with Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and PPG coatings, HVLP spray application, HEPA-filtered sanding, and zero-VOC options where a household needs them. A free color consultation comes with it.

Use the guides below to sanity-check an order of magnitude. Then get the scope in writing, from whoever you hire.

Questions about this study

Why do painting cost guides disagree with each other so much?

Mostly scope, not geography. On a whole-home interior repaint, Angi and HomeAdvisor publish $965 to $3,089 while Fixr publishes $12,648 to $23,540 — about 24 times from the lowest low to the highest high — because Fixr prices total home floor area including prep, priming and sealing, while Angi prices walls. The same pattern shows up on cabinets: Bob Vila publishes $422 to $1,415 and HomeGuide $2,000 to $6,500 for what both call painting kitchen cabinets.

Which painting cost guide is the most accurate?

None of them is accurate for a specific house, because none of them has seen it. What can be checked is internal consistency. HomeGuide's drywall rate of $3 to $8 per square foot is the only one in this study that reconciles with its own project totals; the $50 to $80 per square foot printed by Angi, HomeAdvisor, Fixr and This Old House does not. On hardwood refinishing, five of the six publish the identical $3 to $8, which reflects shared sourcing rather than five independent measurements.

How much does it cost to paint a house interior?

Published national figures range from $965 to $3,089 (Angi and HomeAdvisor, $2,022 average) through $1,800 to $10,000 (This Old House) and $3,500 to $10,000 (HomeGuide, $7,500 average) up to $12,648 to $23,540 (Fixr). Per square foot of floor area the same guides publish anywhere from $1 to $4 up to $5.75 to $10.70. Read the scope line on each page before using any of these to budget.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

Published national figures split into two clusters. Angi, HomeAdvisor and Bob Vila put a kitchen at roughly $422 to $1,466 with averages near $900. HomeGuide, Fixr and This Old House put the same work at $900 to $6,500. Cabinet refinishing is a separate job with its own figures: $1,500 to $5,000 across HomeGuide, Angi, HomeAdvisor and Bob Vila, and no published guide at all from Fixr.

Can I use a national average to budget my painting project?

Use it to sanity-check an order of magnitude, not to budget. Across the 96 guide-and-job combinations in this study, 7 publish no figure and 7 publish a figure on a basis that cannot be compared with the rest. An itemized written estimate that lists surfaces, prep, coatings and coats is the only document that describes your house rather than a national composite.

Are Angi and HomeAdvisor two separate sources?

No. They are the same company publishing a shared cost dataset, so matching figures between them are not corroboration. In this study they agree exactly on interior painting ($2,022), exterior painting ($3,177) and cabinet painting ($942), and differ by one to three dollars on hardwood refinishing, cabinet refinishing and popcorn ceiling removal.
